Alexander Technique for Back Pain

This 10 min video summarises the NHS randomised trial that was done to show the effectiveness of learning the Alexander Technique to help deal with back pain.

‘Extensive coverage has today been given to a study that found the Alexander technique – a method of teaching improved posture – is beneficial for easing back pain. The study on the technique involved over 500 people with chronic back pain from general practices across the UK. It found that people who received one-to-one instruction in the Alexander technique, along with exercise, had reduced back pain and improved disability after one year compared to those receiving standard care.’

Why Train at BAS…

Watch this 4 minute ‘round table discussion’ between the students to hear why they choose to train at the Bristol Alexander School.

The two videos below are 30 second snapshots showing that applying the Alexander Technique in your life can make activities a lot easier!

Running with the Alexander Technique…

… and walking the dog

Susannah Baker (MSTAT) writes:

“I trained at the Bristol Alexander School and loved my time there. I feel very fortunate to have been taught by excellent teachers who provided a firm foundation in the principles of the Technique, as well as the practical skills needed to go on and teach. I have since set up a successful practice as an Alexander teacher, which I could not have done without having trained in such a supportive environment.”

Jack Vaughan (music student) writes:

“In my first year at University, I was offered the chance to work with the students at BAS every Tuesday for half an hour. I signed up immediately for the year and didn’t regret it at any point. I was having trouble with my back and neck at the time, and was practising saxophone for around three hours a day. I immediately warmed to my teacher who helped me feel incredibly comfortable and I felt amazingly awake and competent through the simple yet new and refreshing work in those sessions. I learnt things that I could take out with me in the world and apply immediately. These made a marked difference to my confidence and ability in my studies/performance, as well as in my social life. In particular, Alexander helped me deal calmly and practically with the challenges of first year student life. I felt more grounded and this helped me through turbulent times. If I could have an Alexander session every morning, I would do so.”
